Proper Locations of ADA Signs

One of the most common sign types used for identifying rooms with doors in office buildings, hospitals, schools, and businesses of all sizes are ADA door signs. Every building owner has to comply with ADA standards and so they need to purchase and display these signs on their buildings.

It is the American Disability Act or ADA that have listed their standards that building owners have to comply with. Business owners should be able to put their ADA signs in place near doorways according to the standards given.

If you have single doors, you need to mount your ADA signs at the latch side of the door leading into the room or office. It will be very easy for people to spot the signage in this side of the door. And this is also in compliance with ADA standards.

A room with double doors and with only one door leaf actively swinging, should have the sign mounted on the inactive side. The ADA sign has to be put in the door that is not being used to enter the area.

ADA signs should be put on the right wall of the right handed door of a double door which are both actively swinging.

If there are no walls spaces for hanging signs on the latch side for single doors, you should mount the sign to the right wall of the door.

You should look for the next nearest adjacent wall to put up your ADA signs if there are no wall spaces available that are indicated in the ADA requirements.

You can easily find buildings where these door types where the signs are positioned as examples. If you visit hospitals and office buildings, you will see examples of door sign locations for your guidance.

Make sure that the ADA sign is mounted in a safe location by the door of the room it is indicating. If you put your ADA sign properly, then the people looking for their rooms can be kept clear of swinging doors.

An 18″x18″ minimum floor measurement is indicated in the ADA official guidelines. This is measured from the swing of the door edge to the center of the ADA lettering of the sign.

A 45 degree angle of opened door should determine that enough clearance has been allowed. The minimum measurement of 18 inches from the sign face and to the right of the door swing should provide the needed clearance for safe mounting.

If the area will experience heavy foot traffic, then you can choose to leave more space. It is important that the sign is kept close enough to the door to clearly indicate what that room is.
